Ladakh Halts Operations at Sonam Wangchuk’s School
The Ladakh administration has instructed the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives (HIAL), founded by Sonam Wangchuk, to temporarily halt all activities at its Desert Flower School in Leh. This order comes as the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh is considering a case concerning the cancellation of land allocated to HIAL.
Land Allocation Dispute
The core of the issue is the administration’s decision to cancel 1,076 kanals (approximately 134.5 acres) and one marla (approximately 270 square feet) of land originally allotted to HIAL.
Notice Issued and Instructions
On November 1st, the Tehsildar’s office in Leh issued a notice to Gitanjali J Angmo, co-founder and CEO of HIAL and Sonam Wangchuk’s wife. The notice directs HIAL to cease all classes and activities at the school until the High Court issues a final verdict or provides further instructions.
Legal Proceedings
The matter is currently under review by the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. According to the administration, any further actions by HIAL or its representatives could prejudice the ongoing legal proceedings.
Maintaining Status Quo
The notice emphasizes the need to maintain the current situation and cautions against any actions that might negatively impact the court’s decision. The administration is awaiting the court’s final ruling.
Background
Sonam Wangchuk recently participated in a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, raising concerns about examination irregularities and the NEET-UG paper leak. He subsequently initiated an indefinite hunger strike, which he ended after discussions with government officials.
