Goa College Offers Marriage Readiness Course

New Course Aims to Prepare Young Adults for Marriage

A Goa college is offering a certificate course focused on “marriage readiness,” starting December 2, 2026. The course addresses the preparation required for a healthy and lasting marriage, going beyond wedding planning.

Government Initiative

The introduction of this course follows a statement by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who intends to implement pre-marriage counselling across Goa. This initiative aims to reduce the number of divorce-related petitions.

Statistics on Divorce Petitions

According to figures from the state law department, over 3,000 marriage and divorce-related petitions were filed in Goa’s civil courts between 2022 and 2025. Specifically, 947 petitions were filed in 2024.

Course Details

The 15-day certificate course, offered by the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at Goa College of Home Science, will be held from December 2 to 17, 2026. The course is open to undergraduate and postgraduate students, unmarried young adults, and others interested in building healthy relationships.

Course Topics

The course will cover topics such as “Dating: Understanding Its Purpose and Dynamics,” “Self-Awareness and the Need to Belong,” “Exploring Masculinity and Femininity and Its Influence on Relationships,” and “Wedding Versus Marriage: Understanding the Difference.”

Course Principal’s Statement

According to Mahesh Pai, Principal of Goa College of Home Science, “Marriage readiness involves more than preparing for a wedding. It requires an understanding of oneself, one’s partner, relationships, commitment, and the responsibilities of married life.”

Brochure Question

The college’s brochure poses the question: “We invest almost 20 years in preparing for a career, but how much time do we invest in preparing for a marriage or family life, which usually makes up more of your life than a career?”
