DGTR Recommends Soda Ash Import Restrictions

India to Implement Soda Ash Import Restrictions

On November 6, 2026, the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) recommended a two-year period of quantitative restrictions on soda ash imports into India. This recommendation follows an investigation that revealed a significant increase in imports.

Details of the Proposed Restrictions

The investigation found that imports rose by 89% during the 2023–24 period and remained at that level. This rise was deemed to be threatening serious injury to the domestic soda ash industry.

Application and Companies Involved

The Alkali Manufacturers Association of India filed the application on behalf of DCW Ltd, GHCL Ltd, Nirma Ltd, RSPL Ltd and Tata Chemicals. The proposed quota for the first year is 754,992 metric tonnes (MT), and for the second year, it is 792,740 MT. The total quota over the two years is 1,547,732 MT.

Country-Specific Allocations

The proposed import quotas are allocated to specific countries as follows:

  • USA: 326,745 MT
  • Turkey: 263,829 MT
  • Iran/UAE: 227,443 MT
  • Russia: 144,092 MT
  • European Union: 240,217 MT
  • Kenya: 249,786 MT
  • China PR: 95,298 MT
  • Other countries: 322 MT

Quarterly Tranches

Each country’s annual quota will be divided into four quarterly tranches. Imports must remain within the applicable quarterly limit throughout the two-year period.

Important Note

It is important to note that these recommendations have not yet been confirmed. Further action will be taken by the government.
