Ghaziabad School Uses Lexile Scores to Boost Reading

Improving Reading Skills with Lexile Assessment

A school in Ghaziabad, Seth Anandram Jaipuria School, has implemented a globally recognized assessment framework – Lexile – to evaluate students’ literacy skills and provide targeted support. This initiative, introduced approximately two and a half years ago, has already been used to assess nearly 2,000 students from Classes I to V.

Lexile Scores and Student Evaluation

The Lexile framework assesses students’ reading speed and comprehension. Students in Classes I to V undergo literacy assessments twice a year. The initial evaluation focuses on reading speed, followed by a comprehension test consisting of ten questions based on a provided passage.

Generating Lexile Scores

Based on the performance in the comprehension test, a Lexile Score is generated for each student. This score indicates their reading proficiency and helps teachers understand their specific learning requirements. According to Harish Sanduja, Director Schools at Jaipuria School, “Up to Class III, the focus is on learning to read. After that, the emphasis shifts to reading to learn.”

Personalized Reading Material

The school has organized its library according to Lexile Scores, allowing students to select reading materials appropriate for their abilities. As a result, students within the same class may be reading different books, catering to their individual reading levels. This approach encourages engagement with accessible material and supports gradual skill development.

Impact Across Subjects

Sanduja emphasized that strong reading and comprehension skills are crucial not only for language subjects but also for learning across all subjects, including Science, English, Social Studies, and Mathematics. He stated, “Whether it is Science, English, Social Studies or Mathematics, a child must be able to understand what they are reading. Strengthening literacy skills is essential for better learning across all subjects.”

Ongoing Assessment and Support

Assessment reports are updated online and shared with teachers, enabling them to identify students who are falling behind and provide timely, targeted support. The initiative aims to move away from a uniform approach to learning by recognizing and addressing individual student needs.
