CBSE Updates Subject Structure for Class 10 Board Exams from 2028
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced changes to the structure of Class 10 board exams, starting in 2028. Students in Class IX who will appear for board exams in 2028 will now be able to focus on five compulsory subjects.
Key Changes to the Scheme
According to a CBSE circular, three subjects – Individuals in Society, Modules on Computational Thinking (CT) and AI, and Environmental Education – will not be part of the curriculum for the 2028 Class 10 exams. These subjects were introduced after the current academic session and caused confusion for students.
Compulsory Subjects
The five compulsory board exam subjects will be two languages, mathematics, science, and social science. Students will still study nine compulsory curricular subjects, including a third language, art education, physical education and well-being, and vocational education. Vocational Education will remain a compulsory curricular area.
Implementation Timeline
These changes will apply to students in Class IX during the 2026-27 academic year, who will proceed to Class X in 2027-28. The existing scheme will continue for students in Class X during the 2026-27 academic year.
Skill Subject Option
Students pursuing vocational education will have the option to choose either the ‘Kaushal Vikas’ subject or one of the 22 Skill Subjects notified by the Board. This provides flexibility in their curriculum.
Official Announcement
According to a CBSE circular, “To align the introduction of this curricular area with the implementation schedule, the subject ‘Individuals in Society’ and the ‘Modules of CT & AI’ in Class IX (2026-27) and the subject ‘Environmental Education’ in Class X (2027-28) shall not be part of the curriculum for these batches.”
What Students Should Do
Students in Class IX in 2026-27 should be aware of these changes and focus on mastering the five compulsory subjects. Parents and educators should discuss these updates with students to ensure they understand the revised curriculum.
