AMU Wants Women on Campus, Not at the Ballot Box

Aligarh Muslim University Elections See Increased Focus on Women’s Participation

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is holding student elections after an eight-year gap. The elections have sparked a debate regarding the inclusion of female students and candidates within the student union.

Campaigning and Student Concerns

During campaigning, Saquib Ali Khan, a vice-presidential candidate, approached female students on campus, requesting their votes. However, two female students, Zunaira Habib Alvi and Rahat Ul Aien, questioned the exclusion of women’s votes from the electoral process.

Eight-Year Gap in Elections

The AMUSU elections have not been held for eight years. The current election proceedings are taking place on the university campus.

Dress Code and Candidate Appearance

Male candidates are required to wear a black sherwani, a knee-length coat with a front button closure, as per the prescribed dress code.

Next Steps

Information regarding the date and location of the AMUSU elections has not been announced. The AMU administration has not yet provided specific details regarding the voting process or eligibility criteria for participation.
