NMC Warns Students Against Fake Medical Colleges

NMC Issues Warning on Fake Medical Colleges

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has cautioned students and parents about the presence of fake medical colleges and emphasized the importance of verifying an institution’s recognition before paying fees or seeking admission. This advisory follows a Supreme Court order concerning a fake medical college operating from a farmhouse.

Supreme Court Intervention

The Supreme Court intervened in a case involving a fake medical college. The court directed regulatory bodies, including the NMC, to protect the public from fraudulent institutions and misleading advertisements. This prompted the NMC to issue the current advisory.

Key Verification Steps

According to the NMC, simply having buildings or a website does not guarantee an institution’s legal authorization to offer medical courses. Students must verify the approved number of seats and course permissions through the records of the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB).

What to Avoid

  • Relying solely on brochures, social media advertisements, or claims of Letters of Permission (LoPs).
  • Making payments to unauthorized agents, middlemen, or personal bank accounts.
  • Assuming approval from other regulatory bodies (e.g., for nursing, pharmacy, or Ayurveda) automatically authorizes an institution to offer an MBBS course.

Reporting Suspicious Activity

The NMC urges the public to report suspected fake medical colleges, forged permission documents, and fraudulent agents through the official NMC portal, local police, or State Medical Education Departments. Victims should preserve payment receipts, prospectuses, advertisements, and email correspondence to assist investigations.

Official Resources

Students and parents are directed to consult the NMC’s official website and relevant regulatory and counselling portals for authentic and updated information. The NMC clarified that previous approval does not automatically authorize an institution to admit new batches.
