Jamia Orders Offline Classes, Sets May Union Deadline

University Actions

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has issued two key directives. First, offline classes and examinations will resume from 2 November 2026, for all undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Second, the university has set a deadline of 15 May 2027 for the approval and implementation of the Students’ Union constitution, and the holding of elections within six weeks of the academic session’s start – approximately mid-July 2027.

End of Student Protests

Following nearly three weeks of protests, demanding the revival of an elected Students’ Union, the university has revoked all ongoing disciplinary actions, suspensions, and campus bans related to the hunger strike. Students Ebin Basil and Rehan Khan are instructed to call off their hunger strike with immediate effect.

Election Process Details

The university will follow the recommendations and guidelines of the Lyngdoh Committee when releasing the notification for elections. The approval of the new constitution is a prerequisite for holding elections.

Revocation of Previous Directives

The latest order revokes a previous directive issued on 26 October, which had linked elections to the approval of a new constitution without specifying a deadline. This previous directive also required students to issue a public apology for defamatory statements made during the protest and remove related posts from social media.

Foundation Day Context

These directives were announced on the 106th Foundation Day of the university.
