From 48 percent in Class 5 to Rs 2.5 crore at 26: IIT Kanpur

From Humble Beginnings to AI Leadership

A 26-year-old AI engineer, Tejesh Vaish, is leading AI engineering at Dubai-based Lumian.ai, where he earns Rs 2.5 crore annually. He began his journey with a 48 percent score in Class 5 and has since achieved significant academic and professional success.

Early Academic Challenges

According to India Today, Tejesh initially faced academic challenges, scoring just 48 percent in Class 5. He took a drop year after Class 12 to prepare for the Uttar Pradesh State Entrance Examination (UPSEE) 2019. His routine involved six hours of coaching followed by approximately 12 hours of self-study, often extending until midnight.

IIT Kanpur and Research Opportunities

His efforts paid off when he secured ninth rank in UPSEE 2019, earning admission to the Computer Science programme at IIT Kanpur. Getting into IIT Kanpur exposed Tejesh to opportunities beyond academics, including research, open-source projects and internships. He graduated in 2023 with a CPI of 9.14 and undertook undergraduate research with IIT Kanpur Director Professor Manindra Agrawal, developing a Python implementation of SUTRA, a COVID-19 epidemic model.

Professional Experience

Tejesh has gained experience at Abacus.AI and Simbian, focusing on enterprise AI infrastructure and security. He has also contributed to open-source projects, including TaskGen, AnythingMCP, Python’s exceptiongroup library and Rust’s erased-serde library. He earned approximately Rs 10 lakh through internships, freelance assignments and other paid work.

Building AI Tools for Amazon

Currently, as a Lead Engineer at Lumian.ai, Tejesh builds production AI agents for Amazon brands, helping businesses analyze information and automate workflows. His role involves building the infrastructure that allows these agents to work reliably, including agent runtime, integrations, memory, scheduled tasks, permissions, approvals and evaluation.

Accessibility of AI Careers

Despite his success at IIT Kanpur, Tejesh believes that an IIT degree is not essential for building a successful career in artificial intelligence. He suggests that students from other engineering colleges can establish themselves by developing strong fundamentals, building practical projects, gaining internship experience and contributing to open-source communities.

Homeo AI: A Personal Project

Alongside his professional career, Tejesh has been developing Homeo AI, an application designed to support homoeopathy practitioners. The idea originated after his mother’s cancer diagnosis in 2024, leading him to interact with practitioners and identify areas where technology could assist them. He oversees the platform’s development, deployment and operations.

Recommendations for Aspiring AI Professionals

Tejesh recommends developing a solid understanding of Python, SQL, data structures, probability, statistics and linear algebra. Students should then move towards practical software development skills, including APIs, databases, Git, debugging, testing and deployment. He advises exploring frameworks and tools such as PyTorch and Hugging Face, alongside model APIs, retrieval systems and evaluation techniques.
