CBSE Curriculum Revision
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a revision to the Class 9 curriculum, dropping the Computational Technology (CT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) modules for the current academic session. According to a recent circular, this change is intended to provide clarity for students as they move to Class 10, as reported by Hindustan Times.
Subjects Included in Class 9
For the 2026-27 academic year, students in Class 9 will study nine subjects: three languages (R1, R2 and R3), Mathematics, Science, Social Science, Art Education, Physical Education and Well-being, and Vocational Education. Students may also opt for one additional subject, in accordance with board rules.
Previous Curriculum Changes
In April, CBSE introduced a revised scheme for Class 9 aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023. This included the introduction of Individuals in Society as an interdisciplinary subject, Environmental Education in Class 10, and the CT and AI modules. However, the existing scheme will continue for students currently in Class 10.
Environmental Education Exclusion
The circular also stated that Environmental Education would be excluded from Class 10 for the 2027-28 cohort. NCERT is currently working on the textbooks for Individuals in Society and Environmental Education, but their release timeline has not yet been announced.
Vocational Education and Skill Subjects
Vocational Education remains compulsory, and students can choose between Kaushal Vikas and one of 22 skill subjects. Students opting for a skill subject will take a board examination in that subject in Class 10. Those who pass will receive a certificate under the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF).
Flexibility for Children with Special Needs
The revised scheme provides flexibility for Children with Special Needs (CwSN). They must study one compulsory language with a board examination, while the remaining four board-examination subjects can be chosen from a specified list.
Reason for the Change
According to sources familiar with the matter, the primary goal of this revision is to ensure students have clear communication regarding academic and examination provisions well in advance. The emphasis is on encouraging meaningful learning and reducing exam pressure.
