Meghalaya Opens LP School in Assam Border Area

New Lower Primary School Opens in Assam Border Village

A Lower Primary (LP) school has been inaugurated by Meghalaya in New Jalukpaham, a village along the Assam-Meghalaya inter-state border, sparking concerns and questions about administrative presence in the region. The school’s construction and operation within claimed Assam territory have raised issues regarding territorial claims and development initiatives.

Construction and Inauguration

The school building was completed within six months, according to local sources. It was established at the initiative of the Shillong Missionary to provide education to children in the hilly and remote area. Three teachers from Meghalaya have been appointed to the institution.

Territorial Concerns

The development has prompted questions about how Meghalaya could establish an educational institution and appoint teachers in an area considered to be within Assam’s jurisdiction. Local residents, as stated by Bimal Taroi, village headman of New Jalukpaham, report that the school currently provides education up to Class 5.

Existing Challenges

For years, villages along the Assam-Meghalaya border have faced inadequate access to educational, healthcare, road connectivity, and other essential facilities. The establishment of this school highlights the need for increased developmental efforts by the Assam government in these strategically important areas.

Questions Regarding Administration

Questions have been raised about whether the district administration and state government were aware of the school’s construction and operation, the status of land ownership, and whether the necessary administrative clearances were obtained.

Government Response

The situation underscores the need for the Assam government to take a proactive approach towards border-area development, ensuring that safeguarding territorial interests aligns with the welfare of the people residing there. The development emphasizes the importance of providing access to education, healthcare, and livelihood opportunities.
