Forty-four girl students of Kurupam Ashram School in Parvathipuram Manyam district, Andhra Pradesh, fell ill on Thursday evening. The district administration has organized medical camps at the school and shifted affected students to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
Details of the Illness
The students reported symptoms including post-cyclone fever, stomach aches, and headaches. District Medical Officer Dr. P. Vijayalakshmi stated that these symptoms are common during the season. Physicians, a pediatrician, and a general medicine doctor supervised the medical camps.
Medical Response
Initial treatment involved shifting students to Madaling PHC and subsequently establishing a sick room at the school for continued medical supervision. Three students were admitted to the Kurupam district hospital for further treatment. According to Dr. Vijayalakshmi, none of the students currently exhibit viral fever.
Previous Health Concerns
Kurupam Gurukulam residential school for girls experienced a major health scare last year on October 14th, when 146 students fell ill. Sixty-five students were admitted to KGH, and fifty-nine recovered and returned home. Sadly, two students died of jaundice during the incident.
Parental Concerns and Investigation
Parents have requested an inquiry into the repeated instances of illness at the school. Tribal welfare minister Gummadi Sandhya Rani directed the district administration to set up medical camps.
Current Status
As of Thursday evening, most of the school’s 516 students have been screened. The district administration continues to monitor the students’ health and provide necessary medical support.
