Keralam Teacher Arrested for False Worms Claim

Allegations and Arrest

A physical education teacher, Jijo James, was arrested on Thursday in Kozhikode, Kerala, for falsely claiming that worms were found in food served to students at the State Sports Meet. Police confirmed the arrest following a Facebook post made by the teacher on Wednesday.

Investigation and Charges

According to police reports, the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) held a protest march following the allegation. Kunnamangalam police registered a case against James based on a complaint filed by Sports Meet Convenor P K Aravindan. He has been booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for allegedly giving provocation with the intent to cause a riot. Authorities state that James has since deleted the social media post.

Minister’s Response

Keralam General Education Minister N Samsudheen stated that the incident may be part of a larger conspiracy to disrupt the sporting event. He indicated that departmental action would be taken against the teacher and that the investigation should explore the involvement of individuals with an “anti-social mindset.” Minister Samsudheen also condemned the alleged assault on media personnel and pledged action following a review of the circumstances.

Age Eligibility Concerns

The minister addressed concerns regarding the age eligibility of participants, particularly those from other states. He confirmed that verification processes have been strengthened and medical examinations are being conducted. Action will be taken against students submitting fabricated age documents, as well as schools and teachers involved in facilitating such submissions. Future competitions will feature stricter age-verification measures.

Sports Meet Progress

Despite the controversy, the State Sports Meet, held at the NIT Kozhikode ground, is continuing as scheduled, concluding on October 31st. Officials report that new records are being set during the event.
