Maritime Training Lags Behind Digital Ship Ops

Significant Training Deficit in Maritime Industry

A survey conducted in October 2026 revealed that 82% of maritime professionals believe current training programs are insufficient to prepare crew for the evolving digital environment of modern ships. This issue is supported by a separate, earlier survey conducted in June 2026 by the World Maritime University and Lloyd’s Register Foundation.

Key Findings from Recent Surveys

The OneOcean and Thetius survey found that 52% of respondents frequently (often or very often) observed skilled crew struggling with practical operations. Furthermore, 56% indicated that “tick-box” compliance aids exacerbate this skills gap. Only 18% of those surveyed felt that current training accurately reflected real-world day-to-day operations.

World Maritime University Report Confirms Concerns

The World Maritime University’s report, commissioned by Lloyd’s Register Foundation, echoed these concerns. It found that over 80% of crew members reported receiving digital skills training ‘rarely’ or ‘not at all’. Just 13% indicated that shore-based training consistently aligned with the equipment used onboard ships.

Reasons for the Gap

Limited funding and a shortage of digitally skilled instructors are identified as key factors contributing to the slow pace of improvement. According to Alex Mangan, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer at OneOcean, the problem is “twofold,” citing the rapid advancement of technology alongside outdated training methods.

Calls for Global Standards and Investment

The World Maritime University report stresses the need for coordinated global training standards. It calls for investment in updating training programs and increased initiative from regulators and training providers to address this growing gap. Maritime education providers are responding, although progress remains inconsistent.
