NCERT Launches 20-Hour AI Module for Classes 9-12
The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has released a 20-hour activity-based module on Computational Thinking and Artificial Intelligence for students in classes 9 to 12. This initiative, announced on October 23rd, aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to navigate the evolving landscape of AI.
Module Content and Approach
The module prioritizes practical exercises and discussions over technical definitions. It is designed to be accessible to students with no prior AI knowledge. The module’s four units explore topics including real-world examples of AI, how machines learn, common AI errors, and data privacy considerations.
Key Learning Units
- “AI is Already in Your Life”: This unit uses examples like pressure cookers and smartphone keyboards to illustrate the difference between simple automation, rule-based systems, and learning-based AI.
- “How Machines Learn from Examples”: Students train a classifier using images, learning that training data significantly impacts the system’s performance.
- “When AI Gets It Wrong”: Students conduct a “Hallucination Hunt” to evaluate AI outputs, utilizing five checks: source, claim type, comparison, pause, and confidence.
- “Your Data, Your Rights, Your Responsibility”: Students analyze app privacy policies and consider data collection practices, including scenarios involving personal details and face-recognition systems.
Practical Implementation
The module can be implemented with or without digital devices. Students are encouraged to maintain a “Curious Notebook,” a portfolio documenting their learning journey, including AI diaries, classifier tests, and privacy analyses.
Official Statement
According to NCERT, “The module encourages students to become informed, confident, and responsible users of technology, while reinforcing that human judgement, creativity, and ethical responsibility remain central to learning.”
